INSTEP Produced 30 Technical Talents to Support Melamine Project

With the celebration of 30 graduates of the Technical Energy Enrichment Program, which was sponsored by PETRONAS Chemical Fertilizers Kedah (PCFK), on 6 November 2023, INSTEP achieved yet another significant milestone. The electrical, mechanical, laboratory, and process trade graduates were honored during the event.

Highlighting lifelong learning for continuous improvement, En. Idris Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP reminded the graduates on the importance of putting theory into practical. “Our graduates are the ambassadors to advocate for generative safety culture, in the effort of inculcating the mindset of ‘doing the right things even when no one is watching’, not only in theory, but also in practical when working later on.”

The closing ceremony marked not only an end but also a fresh start, a first step toward realizing their goals and establishing their own technical career path once they left INSTEP grounds.

INSTEP has proudly secured its second accolade from HRD Corp, following its initial triumph in 2014 for Training Provider Award and in 2017 for Human Resources Development (HRD) Awards in the Data Analytics Category. This time, INSTEP wins the prestigious HRD Corp Award for Training Provider East Coast Region, which represents yet another noteworthy turning point in the company’s trajectory toward innovation and excellence. 

The winner was declared at the gala dinner in Kuala Lumpur on October 30, 2023. This award is a testament to the INSTEP’s commitment, dedication, innovation, and remarkable endeavour in shaping the future of technical education. 

Also present during the event were Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Plantation and Commodity Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof and Minister of Human Resources, Yang Berhormat Tuan V. Kimanis Petroleum Training Center (KTC) Career Fair Bridges Sabahan Technical Workforce

Career fairs serve as pivotal platforms connecting eager, soon-to-be graduates to a myriad of professional opportunities. Taking another step in bridging the future technical workforce through the transition from secondary education to further vocational pursuits, Kimanis Petroleum Training Center (KTC) held a career fair on 21 November 2023 at Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre campus.   

This event affords SPM leavers and other visitors the opportunity to acquaint themselves with various vocational fields and industries. Featuring exhibitors from 10 companies, KTC and Vista Career Fair received almost 171 visitors from various background.

The event invited En. M Shahrizal B Jasmani from MPM as the guest of honor to officiate the event.

Receiving this award helps me to elevate TVET significance among public perception, since it is essential for the young talents to stay ahead and relevant in the ever-changing industry landscape,” Aleesyah Bt Asa mentioned in her sharing.

KTC Powering Knowledge: Igniting STEM Interest among Local Students in Kimanis, Sabah

Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC), run by PETRONAS, has been actively promoting and pushing for equal educational opportunities for young students in the surrounding community. In an effort to reach out to the local community, KTC has launched SPM Success Booster on 1 September 2023, and Play and Learn (PAL) on 4 October 2023. 

 

SPM Success Booster 

SPM Success Booster is an annual tuition programme for SPM students, established by KTC since the year 2019. Leveraging on the young talents from its current trainees on-campus, 2 of the trainees served as teachers for this 12-week intensive programme. With the aim to facilitate and assist SPM students to improve their academic accomplishment in Mathematics, Science and English, the tuition programme will effectively uplift their competency and proficiency in the STEM subjects through the modules and learning plans crafted by the KTC team.  

 

Additionally, it encourages students to apply Higher-Level Thinking Skills (HTH) and fosters the development of problem-solving abilities while expanding their knowledge in STEM subject.   

 

The selected 30 participants for the programme were chosen from B40 families in the area nearby Kimanis, involving 3 schooles, namely SMK Benoni, SMK Kimanis and SMK Bongawan. The programme gained full support and was lauded by Ketua Anak Negeri, that were present during the launching of the programme.  

 

This programme was officiated by Encik Azhar B Aris. Several other stakeholders that graced the occasion with their presence were District Chief, Tn. Haji Yunus Bin Matarin, Ketua Anak Negeri Encik Sulaiman bin Untol, Encik Haji Sukar Ngadiran and representative, Puan Fatimah Haji Mohamad, Puan Pasah Bt Tahir and Puan Jumidah Bt Ngadiran.

Play & Learn (PAL) 

 

In addition to SPM Success Booster, KTC also focuses its education delivery to primary school students through its Fun Learning – Play & Learn (PAL) Programme at SK Daingin which is located 12 km away from KTC. This initiative aimed to inspire young students’ love of learning through engaging and interactive learning activities.  A total of 35 students consisting of Primary 1 and 2 participated in this programme.   

 

KTC staff and trainees collaborated with PETROSAINS to ensure the programme was delivered in a fun way to cater to the young students’ lens, including using modules such as Paper Mache and Leafy Tea to attract the young students to develop Higher-Level Thinking Skills (HTH), foster creativity, and build problem-solving skills.

Celebrating Hari Alam Sekitar Negara 2023 with Batu Rakit Beach Cleaning

A nationwide celebration for the environmentalist and green enthusiast, Hari Alam Sekitar Negara (HASN) 2023 is celebrated from 20 to 27 October annually. Since its inception in October 1989, HASN has been an annual commemoration by Malaysia Federal Government as its continuous support to educate environment knowledge and instil awareness of environmental conservation and reservation among local community.

Acting as a platform for Batu Rakit neighbourhood to experience ‘Gotong Royong Kutip Sampah Sambil Riadah’ or more famously known as KUDAH, MBKT in collaboration with Department of Environment and UNISZA celebrated HASN with beach cleaning activity at Pantai Batu Rakit.

 

Armed with trash pickers and plastic bags, 150 participants together with 15 volunteers from INSTEP roamed the Pantai Batu Rakit shoreline, with a mission, to restore the pristine sand beach to be free with trash. 

264kg trash were collected throughout the programme.

With almost of 8 million tons of plastic in our ocean worldwide and even more winding up on beaches every day, it is always our duty to combat environmental harm, and beach cleaning is one of the efforts worth the try.

INSTEP Elevates Technical Competency for 23 TEP Graduates under MRCSB Sponsorship

An avenue to celebrate the completion of 23 Technical Energy Enrichment (TEP) learners under Malaysia Refining Company Sdn. Bhd. (MRCSB) sponsorship, an intimate closing ceremony was held recently on 23 October 2023 in INSTEP, Batu Rakit. 

The ceremony was filled with a mix of emotions, a sense of pride for the accomplishments achieved, nostalgia for the experiences shared, and anticipation for the future endeavours.

Started their journey since February 2023, the 23 learners from Process, Electrical and Mechanical trade completed their 10-month study after enriching learning journey in INSTEP. The learning block for TEP is Comprised of Competency Based Assessment (CBA) modules, which are based on PETRONAS Occupational Skill Standard (POSS) and complemented with experiential learning at UDTP.

“As a leading downstream company dominating nearly 70% of Malaysia’s marketing, trading, and refining sectors, MRSCB proudly extends a warm welcome to our 23 new graduates. Embrace this opportunity as a pivotal moment in your journey to contribute to our nation’s economic prosperity and join our family in driving positive change,” En. The learners prepared a special performance during the event.

INSTEP Enhance Developing Countries Technology Innovation in Oil & Gas Industry through MTCP

INSTEP has once again collaborated with Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) to organise a training session from 9 to 12 October 2023, as part of the collective effort by Malaysian Government to support growth of global talents in the oil & gas industry in developing countries.

 

MTCP entails prioritising developing countries of strategic interests and is conducted with the aims to share development experience with other countries while strengthening bilateral relations between Malaysia and other developing countries, and to foster South-South Cooperation (SSC) through technical cooperation among developing countries. This year’s session, INSTEP had received 13 participants from Jordan, Timor Leste, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Cambodia and Philippines.

The participants had the opportunity to test the VR module developed by INSTEP Creative Services team.

The participants were immersed during the lecture conducted by INSTEP Learning Solutions team.

In this year’s theme, the topic centred around the advancement of novel innovation implemented in the energy industry that supports Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0. The programme incorporated theoretical learning in classroom, live demonstrations and simulations. Adding fun to the programme and to loosen up prior to flying back home, the participants visited KLCC Sky Bridge and Observation Deck on their last day in Malaysia.

MTCP participants also stopped by PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd for educational visit.

Since its inception in 1980, more than 37,000 participants from 144 recipient countries have benefited from various programmes offered under MTCP. INSTEP as one of the leading learning institutions involved in annual programme of MTCP is committed to serve its purpose as technical training centre by conducting capacity building programmes in various key areas of development especially in industrial and technical training.

INSTEP has once again collaborated with Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) to organise a training session from 9 to 12 October 2023, as part of the collective effort by Malaysian Government to support growth of global talents in the oil & gas industry in developing countries.

 

MTCP entails prioritising developing countries of strategic interests and is conducted with the aims to share development experience with other countries while strengthening bilateral relations between Malaysia and other developing countries, and to foster South-South Cooperation (SSC) through technical cooperation among developing countries. This year’s session, INSTEP had received 13 participants from Jordan, Timor Leste, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Cambodia and Philippines.

The participants had the opportunity to test the VR module developed by INSTEP Creative Services team.

The participants were immersed during the lecture conducted by INSTEP Learning Solutions team.

In this year’s theme, the topic centred around the advancement of novel innovation implemented in the energy industry that supports Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0. The programme incorporated theoretical learning in classroom, live demonstrations and simulations. Adding fun to the programme and to loosen up prior to flying back home, the participants visited KLCC Sky Bridge and Observation Deck on their last day in Malaysia.

MTCP participants also stopped by PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd for educational visit.

Beyond Boundaries: Appreciating INSTEP’s Inspiring Instructors

A special occasion to commemorate INSTEP Learning Line Facilitators (LLFs), INSTEP Beyond Boundaries: Appreciating Our Inspiring Instructors was held on 25 September 2023, at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. In addition to celebrating the backbone of our energy workforce technical growth, the event also served its purpose by being a platform to promote INSTEP Business Transformation.

The session started with an insight on INSTEP Business Transformation by Senior Manager of Learning Resource & Delivery, INSTEP, En. A. Rushdan M. Ghazali. “INSTEP is positioned to deliver technical learning and development within the Capability Development Priority ecosystem for Technical, functional and sustainability aspects,” he highlighted in the sharing.

INSTEP’s offerings to upskill and reskill technical workforce include Technical Certification Solutions (TCS), Executive and Non-Executive Technical Solutions (ETS & NETS), Onboarding Solutions and HSE and Sustainability Solutions (HSESS).

The event continued with a sharing session by Manager of Learning Partner Management, INSTEP, Madam Arwani Abdullah, with her sharing titled ‘Towards Certified Trainers’.

“In our effort to ensure INSTEP delivers high quality programme, we widen our lens, not to only focus on training facilities quality, but also to consider the quality of trainers delivering the training. The trainers should be able to meet the baseline quality standard and remain active, while continuously developing their technical and teaching skills throughout their training careers, according to HRD Corp”, she highlighted in her sharing.

According to HRD Corp, the term ‘trainer’ refers to a professional trainer certified or accredited by them and will be categorised as TTT Certified Trainers, TTT Exempted Trainers, and Accredited Trainers. A training is recognised as HRD Corp claimable in a condition where it is delivered by a certified or accredited trainer, unless exemption is provided.

The last session of the day was a forum session with guest speakers Mr. Jamari M Shah, Custodian of Petrophysics and Technologist Norfalisa Bt Jusoh, Staff of Process Design, together with the moderator in action, General Manager of Learning Academy, INSTEP, Mr. Azhar bin Ahmad.

Mr. Jamari M Shah shared on his experience of being an instructor while working, which also helped him in incorporating lifelong learning. “In addition to teaching my learners, it also helped me in self-development through understanding the current needs of the industry, amidst the fast-paced changes of technology nowadays.”

Meanwhile, Technologist Norfalisa Bt Jusoh shared about her experiences in handling wide group of learners in her class. “In order for me to prepare prior to the class delivery, it all starts with understanding our audience. By doing this, I can identify the best way to cater to individuals’ needs and requirements.”

En. Idris presented appreciation tokens to 5 instructors with top performance, based on number of programmes delivered and rating received from learners.

“In PETRONAS’ transition to renewable energy and lower carbon businesses, our LLFs play a pivotal role in delivering sustainable technical learning solutions, to upskill and reskill our current and future workforces, to help them adapt to new technologies and processes in developing new energy solutions,” INSTEP Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, En. Idris expressed his notion regarding this event.

KTC Continues to Support Technical Capability Development Among Sabahan Youths

PETRONAS-run Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC) continues to support technical capability development among Sabah youths and has so far produced 194 graduates, including the 20 newly graduated trainees from Batch July 2019 intake, marking a significant milestone in its mission to empower Sabahan youths with technical skills to support nation energy workforce.

Highlighting the importance of skills development, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, En. Idris B Ibrahim said KTC has gone a long way since its inception in 2011 as part of PETRONAS’ social impact programme in Sabah to support the state’s human capital development.

“KTC is committed to prepare Sabahan talents with essential skills and qualification for them to contribute towards enriching the state and the country’s energy workforce, and simultaneously improving state’s economic sector” he said at the KTC convocation ceremony.

“On top of that, KTC graduates’ employability rate approaches almost 100 per cent employment by the oil and gas as well as by other industries,” he added.

The Best Graduate of 2023, Nurul Syafiqah Najmuddin delivered her appreciation speech during the event.

Nurul Syafiqah Najmuddin, the Best Graduate of 2023 in her speech mentioned about the essence of accomplished students. “In my personal definition of accomplished students, in addition to seeking the knowledge, we also need to be mindful of our attitude and emotional aspect.”

KTC is the first institution in Sabah to be recognised as an Accredited Centre by the Department of Skills Development under the Ministry of Human Resources. It offers a three-year full-time diploma-level training in Industrial Instrumentation & Control System – Monitoring & Control (Level 4), Malaysian Skills Diploma (DKM).

The graduates from KTC were also identified as potential feeders to INSTEP’s Technical Energy Enrichment Programme (TEP). TEP, as one of INSTEP’s signature training programme, is a pre-employment sponsorship programme, sponsored by PETRONAS Operating Units.

167 Technical Energy Enrichment Programme (TEP) learners celebrated their completion of 10-month training programme in a graduation ceremony on 19 September 2023, in INSTEP, Batu Rakit, Terengganu. TEP is a 10-month pre-employment sponsorship programme, sponsored by PETRONAS Carigali Sarawak Asset (SKA) and Sabah Asset (SBA). It is specially designed to develop essential technical competencies to upskill and produce certified job-ready technicians with skills of tomorrow to support the global energy industry.

This batch is the first batch of sponsored learners from upstream industries, for technical trades such as production, instrument, mechanical and electrical. Among the 167 graduates, 27 of them are Sabahan youths sponsored by SBA and 140 of the learners are Sarawakian youths sponsored by SKA.

The INSTEP signature training programme is tailored to cater upskilling and upgrading of technical competencies through theoretical and practical learning. The blended learning solutions also include On-Job-Training in Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP), INSTEP.

Safety element is highlighted in every job we are doing, not only in theory, but also in the practical learning and On-job training in INSTEP.”
