INSTEP Fosters Environmental Awareness Among Younger Generation

Posted date: 30 June 2022

Kelestarian (Sustainability)!”

Bumi Hijau (Green Earth)!”

Enthusiasm and high spirits by Batu Rakit primary school students echoed aloud over the INSTEP hall during the Sentuhan Edu-Lestari programme last week.

Under PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd (PTTSB) Sustainability Framework, positive social impact is one of the key areas which is to be realised through high-impact Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programmes at INSTEP, aligning with PETRONAS aspiration to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) by 2050.

INSTEP Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim said, “INSTEP supports the aspiration through its Signature CSR programme: Sentuhan Edu-Lestari initiative. This project, which involves tree planting and educational campaigns, is a combination of two (2) focus areas under Yayasan PETRONAS aspirations, namely Sentuhan Ilmu (Education) and Sentuhan Alam (Environment).”

INSTEP engaged with communities in the nearby area, amongst the schools involved in the project are SK Pagar Besi, SK Batu Rakit, SK Maras, SK Bukit Wan, SK Merang, SK Lembah Bidung, SK Darat Batu Rakit, and SK Pechah Rotan. The programme involved 160 sub-urban primary students with end in mind to produce Environment Sustainabillity Ambassadors from each school, who will be responsible to amplify the aspiration to wider communities.

Idris added, “There are limited exposure and awareness on sustainability in the sub-urban area. Therefore, we aim to create awareness and better the environment through education and hands-on activities for the well-being of current and future generation. These efforts are part of our commitment in complementing our larger goals for greater environment and sustainable livelihood.”

The main highlight of the 4-day Sentuhan Edu-Lestari Schools Visit to INSTEP was tree planting, in which a total of 80 mango trees were planted around INSTEP compound by the primary school students. This effort not only promotes awareness among young generation but also contributes to potential CO2 (carbon dioxide) absorption in long term.

Awareness talk on Sustainability and educational sharing on INSTEP Food Composter House were also conducted during the programme. Throughout the activities, the young students are educated on how to care for environment and effectively implement and monitor sustainable efforts starting today.

“In addition to conserving the environment, this outreach initiative is also a meaningful platform for INSTEP employees to impact their daily life and deliver positive outcome in preserving and protecting our planet. This also aligns with PETRONAS Sustainability Agenda on safeguarding the environment.” Idris added.
