INSTEP Initiates Its First Inaugural Collaboration for The TEP Programme

On 2 March 2024, INSTEP joyously greeted 154 new onboardees into the Technical Energy Enrichment Programme (TEP) under sponsorship by Downstream and Gas Business Operating Units (OPUs).

The 10-month pre-employment sponsorship initiative is designed to cultivate crucial technical skills and instil a generative culture to propel individuals’ careers within the energy sector.

In a notable development for this March cohort, PETRONAS initiates its inaugural collaboration with an external partner, Shell, merging the TEP with Shell’s sponsorship programme. PETRONAS supports 130 learners, while Shell backs 24 learners.

Furthermore, this intake comprises learners in Production, Mechanical, Instrumentation, and Electrical trade, predominantly from the East Coast Region, Sabah, and Sarawak.

During the registration day, learners from all corners of Malaysia registered for the programme, accompanied by their families bidding them farewell.

The programme’s culmination is set for 2 January 2025. In the meantime, let’s extend a hearty welcome to all the newcomers!

INSTEP Continues to Contribute to Local Communities through Zakat Wakalah Technical Programme

Through a collaboration with the Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Istiadat Melayu (MAIDAM), INSTEP has successfully enrolled 27 local Terengganu students from the less fortunate, Asnaf group into the Zakat Wakalah Technical Programme who were celebrated in ceremony dated 18 February 2024. Funded by the Assyakirin Fund, the programme aims to provide comprehensive training in energy industry maintenance.

The students comprising of 22 males and 5 females come from diverse educational backgrounds including diplomas, technical and vocational colleges, Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) and self-employment. This diversity reflects the programme’s inclusivity and accessibility to individuals from various walks of life 

Over the course of 12 weeks, the students will undergo training modules such as Sustainability Awareness, Behavioural Safety, Working at Height, Basic Fire Fighting (BFF) Training, Static Equipment, Electrical Wiring, Islamic Modules, English Communication, and more. This comprehensive curriculum ensures the participants receive a well-rounded education in energy industry maintenance.  

Holding up to the “Experiencing is Enriching” tagline, the programme also includes experiential learning activities ranges from Mentor-Mentee sessions, team building exercises, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes, career exposure talks, industrial site visits and mock interviews. These activities aim to provide students with real-world experiences and prepare them for future careers in the energy industry.

Safety Beyond Borders: INSTEP Welcomes 16 INPEX Trainees for HSE-OJT Training Programme

As part of INSTEP’s initiative in serving clients from around the world, 16 engineers from INPEX Corporation, a Japanese exploration and production company, were celebrated on 7 January 2023.

The HSE-OJT training programme that runs between 7 January and 1 February will accommodate all 16 learners through a one-month programme which focuses on occupational and environmental safety aspects and practices in the oil & gas industry.

During his welcoming remarks, Dr. Azir Salleh said that “The continuous collaboration between INSTEP and INPEX Corporation is a strong indicator of INSTEP’s status as the trusted technical learning solutions partner in creating a sustainable talent pipeline, both domestically and internationally.”

Dr. Azir also promised that the enriching learning experience throughout the 4 weeks at INSTEP campus will equip the trainees with the necessary knowledge and skills for their career development.

KTC Powering Knowledge: Igniting STEM Interest among Local Students in Kimanis, Sabah

Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC), run by PETRONAS, has been actively promoting and pushing for equal educational opportunities for young students in the surrounding community. In an effort to reach out to the local community, KTC has launched SPM Success Booster on 1 September 2023, and Play and Learn (PAL) on 4 October 2023. 

 

SPM Success Booster 

SPM Success Booster is an annual tuition programme for SPM students, established by KTC since the year 2019. Leveraging on the young talents from its current trainees on-campus, 2 of the trainees served as teachers for this 12-week intensive programme. With the aim to facilitate and assist SPM students to improve their academic accomplishment in Mathematics, Science and English, the tuition programme will effectively uplift their competency and proficiency in the STEM subjects through the modules and learning plans crafted by the KTC team.  

 

Additionally, it encourages students to apply Higher-Level Thinking Skills (HTH) and fosters the development of problem-solving abilities while expanding their knowledge in STEM subject.   

 

The selected 30 participants for the programme were chosen from B40 families in the area nearby Kimanis, involving 3 schooles, namely SMK Benoni, SMK Kimanis and SMK Bongawan. The programme gained full support and was lauded by Ketua Anak Negeri, that were present during the launching of the programme.  

 

This programme was officiated by Encik Azhar B Aris. Several other stakeholders that graced the occasion with their presence were District Chief, Tn. Haji Yunus Bin Matarin, Ketua Anak Negeri Encik Sulaiman bin Untol, Encik Haji Sukar Ngadiran and representative, Puan Fatimah Haji Mohamad, Puan Pasah Bt Tahir and Puan Jumidah Bt Ngadiran.

Play & Learn (PAL) 

 

In addition to SPM Success Booster, KTC also focuses its education delivery to primary school students through its Fun Learning – Play & Learn (PAL) Programme at SK Daingin which is located 12 km away from KTC. This initiative aimed to inspire young students’ love of learning through engaging and interactive learning activities.  A total of 35 students consisting of Primary 1 and 2 participated in this programme.   

 

KTC staff and trainees collaborated with PETROSAINS to ensure the programme was delivered in a fun way to cater to the young students’ lens, including using modules such as Paper Mache and Leafy Tea to attract the young students to develop Higher-Level Thinking Skills (HTH), foster creativity, and build problem-solving skills.

INSTEP Supports New Energy Transition through Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project in Collaboration with Gentari

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) has been active in promoting sustainability among its employees in endorsing support for PETRONAS’ sustainable aspiration, including the recent launch of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) project in collaboration with Gentari, the clean energy solutions entity owned by PETRONAS. The project started producing electricity in December last year and is anticipated to power up to 1 Megawatt (MW) of full capacity generation.

The 1.4MWp system is expected to generate 1,927.240 Megawatt Hour (MWh) of clean energy per annum, which amounts close to 30% of INSTEP’s overall energy requirement, effectively reducing 1285.47 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually.

For further research and application purposes, INSTEP’s Solar PV 1 and 2 Project will furnish Gentari with valuable data and insights regarding its effectiveness and performance in Malaysia’s tropical environment. INSTEP has installed solar panels on the rooftops of several of its facilities, including academic and office buildings.

The Commercial Operation Launch event was hosted by the Gentari team at INSTEP on August 24, 2023, with the presence of Gentari’s Head of Renewable Energy (Malaysia and Southeast Asia), Mr Sy Malek Faisal Sy Mohamad, to officiate the ceremony. The event also served as an expression of gratitude to the project team from the Campus Asset Management Department at INSTEP, marked by a Focused Recognition presentation by the Gentari team. To add to the enjoyment of the event, a special electric vehicle (EV) was brought for test-drives.

The installation of a 5 (kilowatt) kW Solar Rooftop Photovoltaic (PV) system at the INSTEP Training Facility has been carried out by Gentari for educational purposes, including research, data analysis, and training activities.

In addition to that, INSTEP also provides a ground-mounted Solar PV facility under the Electrical Maintenance Workshop to upskill the technical workforce in supporting the energy transition to cleaner energy solutions.

“With achieving net zero carbon emission as our ultimate goal, the progress towards undergoing a just energy transition is also crucial. In PETRONAS’ transition to renewable energy and lower carbon businesses, INSTEP plays the role in retooling human capital equation through the delivery of sustainable technical learning solutions, to upskill and reskill our current and future workforces to help them adapt to new technologies and processes to develop new energy solutions,” Mr. Idris b Ibrahim, INSTEP Chief Executive Officer commented during the event.

Adding this project to INSTEP’s sustainability commitments, several of INSTEP’s own sustainable initiatives include rainwater harvesting for internal use, a food composter to recycle food waste into fertilizers, and the installation of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and high mast lighting to reduce energy consumption.

As part of MFT 50:30:0, INSTEP places a high priority on sustainable growth to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The launch of this project serves the purpose of supporting INSTEP’s role in becoming an active participant in the transition to cleaner energy sources.

INSTEP Announces Continuous Collaboration with UMP in Technical Education

A Master Service Agreement (MSA) was signed between Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd (PTTSB) that owns Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) on 19 June at the state-of-the-art training centre in Batu Rakit, Terenggnanu.

The agreement was honourably signed by Vice Chancellor of UMP, Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd, Idris Ibrahim.

Also present at the signing ceremony are Director of Centre for Strategic Academic Collaboration UMP, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Ruzaimi Mat Rejab, Dean of Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology, Prof. Ts. Dr. Che Ku Muhammad Faizal Che Ku Yahya, INSTEP Head of Marketing & Sales Division, Mohd Asri Omar, senior officers and guests from the industries, INSTEP and UMP.

The agreement marks a concrete joint collaboration between both parties covering areas in training, capability development and projects in which the utilisation of the game-changing live training plant at INSTEP, Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) is part of the value added. 

Commenting on the MSA, Prof. Dato’ Ts Dr. Yuserrie said, “The Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) has given a new impetus to educational transformation. It demands changes in the contents of education, especially in technical education.

“The strategic partnership between UMP and PTTSB has started with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2016, followed by a Mutual Service Agreement (MSA) inked in 2018, which saw the delivery of MSc in Process Plant Operation modules with experiential hands-on learning provided by INSTEP.

“Throughout the years, the MSc programme governed by the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology has gained abundant benefits from the undoubted commitment from both parties through various meetings and workshops, information exchange, promotion initiatives, as well as hands-on training for the lecturers and enrolled students,” he added in his remarks during the signing ceremony.

Meanwhile, he is grateful that the MSc in Process Plant Operation programme has obtained full accreditation from Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) in November 2019.

At the same time, both parties agreed to continue with the MSc in Process Plant Operation Programme

and to extend the collaboration in providing more training for industries including in areas of Robotic Technology, Drone, and Solar which UMP have the expertise.

Idris in his remarks said, “Our modules and programmes are designed to provide experiential learning at UDTP, with its ability to simulate real onshore and offshore plant environment. Learners’ problem-solving skills are put to test, and the lesson learnt from the hands-on exposure will prevent errors from happening when they operate in live plant in the future.

“In delivering our value of industry & technology-driven technical learning solution, we at INSTEP will continue to play our vital role in accelerating the competency development and customising training programmes, in line with our aspiration to be a progressive energy solutions partner enriching energy workforce for a sustainable future,” Idris added.

The continuation of this strategic partnership has nurtured a positive impact to the public, especially related to knowledge sharing, professional and capability development. It also focuses on several areas which include Capability Development and Training Programs, Competency Assessment and Management, Joint Training Courses, Training Facilities, Technical, Technology, Personnel, Familiarisation Programme and Software Support.

A Master Service Agreement (MSA) was signed between Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd (PTTSB) that owns Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) on 19 June at the state-of-the-art training centre in Batu Rakit, Terenggnanu.

The agreement was honourably signed by Vice Chancellor of UMP, Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd, Idris Ibrahim.

Also present at the signing ceremony are Director of Centre for Strategic Academic Collaboration UMP, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Ruzaimi Mat Rejab, Dean of Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology, Prof. Ts. Dr. Che Ku Muhammad Faizal Che Ku Yahya, INSTEP Head of Marketing & Sales Division, Mohd Asri Omar, senior officers and guests from the industries, INSTEP and UMP.

The agreement marks a concrete joint collaboration between both parties covering areas in training, capability development and projects in which the utilisation of the game-changing live training plant at INSTEP, Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) is part of the value added. 

Commenting on the MSA, Prof. Dato’ Ts Dr. Yuserrie said, “The Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) has given a new impetus to educational transformation. It demands changes in the contents of education, especially in technical education.

“The strategic partnership between UMP and PTTSB has started with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2016, followed by a Mutual Service Agreement (MSA) inked in 2018, which saw the delivery of MSc in Process Plant Operation modules with experiential hands-on learning provided by INSTEP.

“Throughout the years, the MSc programme governed by the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology has gained abundant benefits from the undoubted commitment from both parties through various meetings and workshops, information exchange, promotion initiatives, as well as hands-on training for the lecturers and enrolled students,” he added in his remarks during the signing ceremony.

Meanwhile, he is grateful that the MSc in Process Plant Operation programme has obtained full accreditation from Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) in November 2019.

At the same time, both parties agreed to continue with the MSc in Process Plant Operation Programme

and to extend the collaboration in providing more training for industries including in areas of Robotic Technology, Drone, and Solar which UMP have the expertise.

Idris in his remarks said, “Our modules and programmes are designed to provide experiential learning at UDTP, with its ability to simulate real onshore and offshore plant environment. Learners’ problem-solving skills are put to test, and the lesson learnt from the hands-on exposure will prevent errors from happening when they operate in live plant in the future.

“In delivering our value of industry & technology-driven technical learning solution, we at INSTEP will continue to play our vital role in accelerating the competency development and customising training programmes, in line with our aspiration to be a progressive energy solutions partner enriching energy workforce for a sustainable future,” Idris added.

PTTSB Signs New Permit to Work (PTW) Programme Contract with PCSB

A virtual signing ceremony between PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd (PTTSB) and Upstream HSSE, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB) was held on 20 April 2021 to commemorate the continuation of PTTSB-PCSB strategic partnership in the delivery of PTW Level 2 and Level 3 (New and Refresher) competency training programmes.

As PETRONAS’ technical learning solutions partner, INSTEP has closely collaborated with UHSSE on Permit to Work (PTW) competency training since April 2018, in which INSTEP has been appointed as the training provider for PTW Level 2 and Level 3 training programmes.

PTW is an essential HSSE training programme that certifies PETRONAS staff and contractors to be competent in commissioning any inshore or offshore work which can be identified as potentially hazardous. However, the Movement Control Order (MCO) announced on 18 Mar 2020 had put all physical training on hold, including PTW programme delivery to all Upstream staff and contractors.

Realising the importance of PTW programme to ensure safety and operational excellence, INSTEP has swiftly collaborated with UHSSE to react to this unprecedented situation by having PTW training programmes being delivered via Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT).

The new PTW programme contract was signed by PTTSB Chief Executive Officer, En. Idris Ibrahim, and Head of UHSSE, Datuk Joseph Podtung. This signifies the trust in INSTEP as a preferred solutions partner in technical training for UHSSE PCSB.

INSTEP and UTP Enter Joint Development Agreement in Augmented Reality Module Application

Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) entered into a joint development agreement in developing an Augmented Reality (AR) application for INSTEP’s Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP). This AR application provides an interactive learning experience of the live training plant environment at UDTP, which simulates upstream and downstream plant scenarios, where learners get to interact with the real-world facilities or equipment via computer-generated perceptual information.

Present during the virtual signing ceremony on Tuesday were INSTEP’s Chief Executive Officer, Idris Ibrahim and UTP’s Vice Chancellor Prof Ts Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib. This virtual signing ceremony witnessed the first ever collaboration forged between these learning solutions partners in bringing virtual learning, a step ahead by digitalising the physical learning facilities to enhance learners’ learning retention, especially amidst this unprecedented time when physical learning is restricted.

Representatives from INSTEP and UTP gathered virtually to commemorate the first such collaboration between both parties in enhancing virtual learning experience.

Through this partnership, INSTEP and UTP have jointly developed a pilot digital module app via the AR approach to complement the existing training modules related to INSTEP’s UDTP.

“In our efforts to constantly innovate our learning delivery and technology, this AR module app is one of our many more ‘Innovate Now’ initiatives that complement our existing Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) and live demonstration to create enhanced experiential learning, and support our learners and customers to grow virtually,” said Idris.

Innovate Now by Turning Physical Training Challenges into Virtual Winning Solutions

When the pandemic reached the Malaysian shores, Movement Control Order (MCO) was announced and came into effect on 18 March 2020. While many were scrambling to find ways to continue business, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) saw it as an opportunity.

As PETRONAS’ technical learning solutions partner, INSTEP has closely collaborated with Upstream HSSE (UHSSE) on Permit to Work (PTW) competency training since April 2018, wherein INSTEP has been appointed as the training provider for all PTW Level 2 and Level 3 training programmes. PTW is an essential and basic HSSE training programme that certifies both PETRONAS staff and contractors to be competent in commissioning any work, be it onshore or offshore. However, the restriction of physical training due to MCO halted the training programmes, including PTW, and hence putting the industrial safety and operational excellence at risk, when the personnel could not be certified and assignments were put on hold as well.

This was unthinkable to both the INSTEP and UHSSE teams, thus both parties immediately sprung into action by having PTW training programmes being delivered via Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT). All the arising issues and importance of PTW training programme were deliberated thoroughly with potential risks and consequences being assessed in supporting the ongoing operations and business demands. The outcome from the series of discussion led to the adaptation of PTW training modules into VILT delivery and was first piloted to several learners, instructors and observers to gather their feedback.

With PTW training programme now being delivered via VILT, that blends the best of interactive live classroom training and the convenient of virtual engagement with learners in online and offline activities, all staff and contractors have been successfully certified.

“Both parties continuously push the boundaries and explore innovative solutions during this unprecedented time to continuously upskill our workforce virtually via VILT PTW Level 2 and Level 3 training programmes,” proudly exclaimed Datuk Joseph Podtung, Head of UHSSE, who was impressed with the team’s courage to act. Bearing the concept of “progress over perfection”, VILT PTW was officially delivered to all PETRONAS staff and contractors since June 2020, and as of November 2020, about 1,700 learners have enrolled for VILT PTW Level 2 and Level 3 (New and Refresher) training programmes.
